CAM-MEK was established in 2023 by local and international health professionals who work directly with the public healthcare system of Northeast Syria, creating a direct bridge for international initiatives, collectives, or individuals who wish to collaborate. CAM-MEK is a platform to put resources directly in the hands of local institutions, without intermediaries. Our goal is to raise awareness about this situation and assist in the development of the public healthcare system, support its sustainability, and promote the training of its professionals.
The context is difficult: the Syrian Civil War broke out in 2011 in a context of dictatorship and repression against political opponents and ethnic minorities. As a result, the northern territories of Syria, inhabited by Arabs, Kurds, Assyrians, and other minorities, declared their autonomy in Northeast Syria, which includes the territory known as Rojava or Syrian Kurdistan.
Of its 5 million inhabitants, about 700,000 are refugees. One of the major challenges is rebuilding public services, severely damaged during the war. The healthcare system receives no support from the Syrian regime or any neighboring country. It is the only region in Syria lacking a UN-recognized border crossing, preventing direct access for humanitarian agencies and complicating the delivery of medical supplies. Major international donors fund projects only through large NGOs, excluding local health authorities from planning and decision-making. This undermines the autonomy of the health system and perpetuates dependence on international aid.
Collaborate with the construction of the public healthcare system in Northeast Syria.
